The Welfare Reform Bill is something that directly affects you as a claimant. The poor are once again being hit the hardest by the recession. Instead of bailing out the banks we should be investing this money in our public welfare, health and education system and the creation of decent, well-paid jobs that aren't just minimum wage drudgery. Underpinning this, we need a solid welfare system in place that supports the working class rather than oppressing us.
The Welfare Reform Bill proposes to:
- Introduce compulsory work for benefits, where claimants will be forced to work for as little as £1.73 an hour.
- Privatise the work of JobCentre Plus, so companies will be paid bonuses for less benefits awarded.
- Cut carers and couples allowances.
- Taking away your income support if you are a single mother and want to concentrate on being a parent when your children are young instead of working.
- Force 2-parent registration on birth certificates, including survivors of domestic violence.
- Share your personal and private information with other people such as the police, prison service, health service and employment agencies.
- Introduce the mandatory power of drug testing.
We want to stop this from happening by setting up a campaign to focus public attention on this bill and what it means for millions of ordinary people. The welfare system should exist to help those in need, not to place yet more burdens on them.
Come to our meeting to discuss these proposals and the concrete action we can take against them.
