Cuts Café has had a very successful week with the workshops and entertainment. The squatted space has caused Hammerson to issue a statement about the regeneration / gentrification plans.

The balance between work and fun is difficult. A space where politics is being discussed can soon become dry, academic and off putting. One of the aims of the space was to be fun and encourage people to interact with others of similar views to build relations and community. With stronger links, it was thought, more action could take place.

Leeds, along with other towns, has been calling out for a space to draw people together to share experiences and knowledge against the onslaught of the governments plans to extend the open up markets to corporations and, under the guise of cutting the deficit, hand more power to business. From social workers who have never joined a union talking about their experiences to different ways we could base our economy there has been plenty of discussion. Supporting action and legal rights were also explained, so if people decided that they were being ignored they have the knowledge to do something about it.

The Café has been far more popular than expected and the weekend has not even started. The NHS, how women are effected more by the cuts and dance / bands are some of the planed activities for the weekend. A more detailed break down of how some workshops went will follow and any questions should be directed to reclaimleeds@gmail.com.
