The event, organised by the Public Sector Alliance and Merseyside Trades Union Council, began at the Metropolitan Cathedral.

Nearly a thousand people marched through the city centre, where newly elected Unite general secretary Len McCluskey addressed the crowd at the Town Hall.

Speaking before the event, he said: "Working people are under massive attacks now.

"This government is expecting them to pay, through job losses and public spending cuts, for the crisis created in the city and by the big banks.

"Resisting that assault must be the number one priority for any union leader."
