“Punk rock was my religion,” their founder Aki Nawaz says. “To some people it’s quite blasphemous, but to me there was a connection between the rebellious philosophy of punk and Islam. All religions began with non-conformity towards the status quo — for me that is the foundation of punk. All this is in Islam, which encourages individual rebellion in the face of many wrongs.”

THE KOMINAS + a screening of THIS IS TAQWACORE (film to be confirmed)Sunday 10th July
at the Bradford Playhouse, 4-12 Chapel Street, Little Germany, Bradford BD1 5DLAdmission £3
In a last minute confirmation, the exciting, ambitious US Muslim punk band THE KOMINAS will be playing at Bradford this Sunday, the 10th July; direct from their performance at London's South Bank Centre. Kominas' funk-infused Bollywood songs have been on rotation on the BBC, and they are a key member of the Taqwacore movement, a genre of punk music dealing with Islam and its culture, originally conceived in Michael Muhammad Knight's 2003 novel, The Taqwacores. The name is a portmanteau of hardcore and the Arabic word Taqwa, which is usually translated as "piety" or the quality of being "God-fearing", and thus roughly denotes fear and love of the divine. The Kominas have been convered by the Guardian, CNN and others: click here to read about them. Doors open at 8pm and before the band play, the space will be set up for discussion and, to be confirmed, a screening of the film This Is Taqwacore. The band will play at around 930pm, and entry is £3.

Subject to availability we will also be showing the new documentary This is Taqwacore. Apologies for not being able to confirm as yet, this is a last minute addition, but come down for the band and you may be able to see a film aswell - if the film is unavailable, discussion and debate will be held before the band play about the Taqwacore movement, punk and Islam.
