Make Pla(y)ce is a project that encourages an alternative approach to the use, experience and creation of urban public spaces.
The influence of the capitalist organisation of space and the (post)fordist organisation of time have caused us to lose our capacity to fully enjoy the convivial potential of public spaces. We tend to quickly pass-by urban spaces, pressured by working schedules and consumption and distracted by scientifically planned emotional landscapes. Smells, sounds, signs and routes are planned to drive, codify, rule and sanction our behaviour.
Make Pla(y)ce has developed ten thematic sessions to help rediscover and inspire a less passive and more playful attitude to the urban spaces in which we spend our lives. You will be encouraged to explore public space, to notice its form and characteristics; to question the public and the private, the permitted and the forbidden, and to develop creative responses to this urban environment.
Inspired by the writings of Henri Lefebvre (The right to the city, 1968), the Situationist International (Détournement and dérive) and Joseph Beuys (social sculpture); three artists, a sociologist, and a psycho-geographer will guide you through your city in a series of ten interactive and playful workshops, turning your conceptions of the city on their head
The session on Wednesday 17 March is an introduction to what we are doing, and will be followed by workshops on most Wednesdays, culminating in a public space intervention in June
