Places:

Leeds bookshop, Waterstones, hosts medical volunteer and human rights worker, Sharyn Lock from Hebden Bridge, reading from her new book, ‘Gaza Beneath the Bombs' next Wednesday 17th March at 6.30pm - entry is free. In August 2008, Sharyn broke the Israeli government's blockade, arriving in Palestine on the ‘Free Gaza', the first boat to break the siege of Gaza. She lived in Gaza City for eight months, and blogged about her work with medics and ambulance crews during the Israeli attack on the Palestinian territory, known as ‘Operation Cast Lead', in which over 1400 died.

Defying an international press ban, Sharyn's eye witness blogs became crucial reading for anyone following the conflict. Her candid and dramatic accounts provide a glimpse behind the media blackout, of life under bombardment and siege. Sharyn's experiences include being in the Al Qds Hospital in Gaza City when it was shelled with white phosphorous, assisting in evacuating patients under fire, rescuing children and families from their homes under sniper fire and helping to deter sniper attack on farmers harvesting crops from the exclusion zone.

This is a free event, but advance booking is appreciated, as refreshments will be served. Waterstone's is at 93-97 Albion Street, Leeds LS1 5AP. ‘Gaza: Beneath the Bombs' is available for £12.99 from Waterstones and Sharyn will be signing copies on the night. Signed copies can be reserved if you cannot attend. Please call 0113 244 4588 for more details.

2.Sharyn Lock lives in Hebden Bridge and is studying midwifery at Bradford University.
3.She has been to Palestine several times, most often with the International Solidarity Movement. She was on the first boat to break the Israeli siege of Gaza, sailing in from international waters in August 2008. In 2002, she was shot by a fragmentation bullet, when Israeli soldiers in an armoured personnel carrier opened fire on human rights workers, wounding 10 in Bethlehem.
