Places: anti-facist

On the 31st of October, football hooligans, far right extremists and Islamophobes from the English Defence League (EDL) plan on invading Leeds with one simple goal - to whip up fear, religious tension and violence. But we can stop this happening.

We need to get as many people as possible to Leeds on Saturday to send a clear message to the EDL that their brand of noxious racism has no place in Yorkshire either. On every previous occasion where the EDL has tried to march it has been blocked by a much larger contingent of anti-racists. The presence of a multi-racial crowd standing in solidarity with Muslims against the EDL is the most powerful force stopping them from growing further.

Last week a similar march in Birmingham ended in violence - we can't let this happen on the streets of Leeds.

This is what we are up against, facists.

Leeds Council Prepare for EDL chaos

Anyone who has been in Leeds city centre over the past couple of days might ahve noticed that the council have taken down the christmas tree in city square (presumably to replace it next week with another one chopped down one...oh so environmentally aware!).
They have also put boards and scaffolding around the Black Prince Statue and shrouded the others in plastic sheeting.
Is this all preparation for the EDL protest which is to be held in the square?

planned security and police responses

This message has been sent around Leeds Uni by security, it might be of interest;

"As you may be aware, between 12.00pm and 3.00pm on Saturday 31st October 2009 there will be two major demonstrations taking place in Leeds City centre. One will be on Victoria Gardens near to the art gallery, the second is in City Square. As a result, Cookridge Street from the Headrow to St Anne's Street will be closed to traffic as will The Headrow east bound from Calverley Street to Cookridge Street. As a result minor traffic disruption is expected. The closures will be from 0600 until 1900. The operation has been planned to minimize disruption to shoppers and retailers in the city. A large policing operation has been planned to facilitate this and to ensure that it will be business as normal on the day. For up to date information on the day please visit either LCC or WYP web sites."

stupid council!

from yorks evening post -

"...police had requested Leeds City Council should not erect the tree until November.

But, because of a break-down in the council's internal communications, the tree was installed by its Parks and Countryside Department.

Yesterday it was removed as a safety precaution prior to Saturday's demonstration.

A Council spokeswoman, said: "We have agreed to remove the tree due to an event taking place on the site involving a mass gathering of people. The tree has been cut down in such a way that it can be reused else where in the city. We will replace the tree as soon as we can."
