The Centre for Canadian Studies and the Centre for Interdisciplinary Gender Studies, both of the University of Leeds, are co-hosting an interdisciplinary seminar on 'Theorizing the Female Body: Gender, Violence, and Narrative Texts', which will be led by Professor Paula Gilbert. Professor Gilbert will speak about Quebec and about her work on violence, gender, and human rights, both in the context of her current book project, Narrating Female Lives: Human Rights Violations against Women and Girls. This will take place from 5pm-7pm in the Douglas Jefferson Room in the School of English on Wednesday, 7th December, 2011.

Paula Ruth Gilbert is Professor of French, Canadian, Women and Gender Studies at George Mason University, USA, and is Visiting Research Fellow in the Centre for International Gender Studies, University of Oxford. She has lived in France and has traveled widely throughout the world--western Europe, Central and South America, Africa, South and Southeast Asia, the Himalayan kingdoms, and Australia/Papua New Guinea. Professor Gilbert has written widely on the subjects of gender, violence, human rights, and Francophone women (among other subjects).

Her three most recent books are: Violence and the Female Imagination: Quebec's Women Writers Re-frame Gender in North American Cultures, Transatlantic Passages: Literary and Cultural Relations between Quebec and Francophone Europe and Confronting Global Gender Justice: Women's Lives, Human Rights.
