Members of the public from Blyth and the surrounding area are invited to an open meeting next month to discuss the biomass plant proposed for North Blyth by developers RES. Participants will include local environmental campaigners (Paul Crossland!) and an expert speaker about the biofuels industry (that's me!). The meeting will start at 7.15pm on 1st December, and will be held at North Blyth Social Club. Local residents and campaigners are concerned about the environmental impact the proposed plant will have on the local area, and the meeting will consider how to get the community more engaged with the issues.
What's wrong with the proposal?
-100 MW, massive scale, burning hundreds of thousands of tonnes of virgin wood each year. Burning trees is green? NO - especially when the developer is falsely accounting for carbon emissions.
- Too close to surrounding properties - the site is just metres away from the nearest dwellings, and biomass power stations are typically more polluting than coal
- Practically on top of a protected area: the Northumberland Coast is protected by law against development due to its high biodiversity. We need to figure out the facts of how this development would threaten it and whether the government is under a duty to stop this.
What do we need?
- ALL HANDS ON DECK ARE NEEDED to build a strong local campaign against this . Media coverage, more knowledge of how the development will affect the coastline, petitions, web skills, lobbying councillors, the lot! the campaign needs your help, so do come on down and give what you can to support. Spread the word and see you there!
