The Cost

'The Cost of Nuclear' is a free, illustrated talk at Victoria Hall in Grange-over-Sands with speakers: Marianne Birkby of Radiation Free Lakeland and David Riley of the Friends of Chernobyl Children, South Lakes. Free admission with donations to the Friends of Chernobyl Children, South Lakes. Refreshments will be available. "The geology of Cumbria has not changed since Nirex found it to be unsuitable for an underground nuclear dump - all that has changed is the Government's insane rush for new nuclear build. An earmarked high level nuclear waste dump gives the false appearance of having "solved" the nuclear waste problem. These carefully orchestrated "steps towards geological disposal" are leading Cumbria up the toxic garden path. There is no plan B on the government agenda for looking after existing nuclear waste, let alone more of the stuff. Cumbria is the only patsy in sight and our only chance of a viable future is to say a resounding NO to this plan for a nuclear dump deep underground. We are repeatedly told that Local Parish Councils are part of the "Partnership" heading down this one way road but Parish Council's have not been given the option of saying NO. Neither have the members of Cumbria County Council with their decision to "express an interest" taken by less than a handful of people led by councillor Tim Knowles (formerly works secretary at BNFL). Cumbria is wonderfully leaky, that is why we love it, that is why we should say a resounding NO to a deep nuclear dump. " Marianne Birkby - Radiation Free Lakeland "Since the disaster there has been an increase of 800% in the incidence of cancers in children living near to the reactor plus there has been a dramatic increase in the rate of babies born with substantial physical disabilities. Babies born limbless, deformed and with severe brain damage. There are so many other radiation related health crises occurring in the region that for the first time in Belarussian history , the death rate is HIGHER, than the birth rate". "The children arrived pale faced, under-nourished, shabbily-dressed and carrying small plastic shopping bags with basic belongings. Some children arrived completely empty handed after the 2 day journey from Belarus. During the next 4 weeks the children blossomed, gaining strength and vitality before our very eyes. One month later the children returned to Belarus with suitcases filled to bursting with warm clothes, shoes, toiletries, vitamin pills and as much pre-packed and tinned food as we could cram into them. The children returned home having gained weight, with rosy cheeks and happy confidence, knowing that people in the UK care and will continue to provide a valuable lifeline for them " Friends of Chernobyl Children, South Lakes
