We will be showing the film 'Viva Mexico' by director Nicolas Défossé at the 1in12 Club at 21-23 Albion street on the Friday the 6th of May at 7pm. The film will be introduced by the director who is on his European tour of the film and will be followed by a question and answer session.
The film is a unique insight into the life of the Mexican group the Zapatistas and one of their most famous members, Subcomandante Marcos. It follows his six month journey throughout Mexico to learn from the resistance of Mexican men and women. Seen as a provocation against those who control the country's economy and its' image, the journey is not without risk, especially when the news of it begins to spread. The Zapatistas are a group of people in Chiapas in southern Mexico who believe in autonomy, self organisation and equality and have been violently repressed by the Mexican state.
There will also be a small exhibition of photographs by a photographer from Chiapas Indymedia, along with tasty food from the 1in12 cafe and delicious local ale and other drinks in the bar downstairs. You do need to be a member or guest of a member to attend this event so please sign in when you arrive or pick up a membership form.
The 1in12 Club is celebrating its 30th Anniversary this month - showing that ordinary people can organise themselves to provide their own cultural and social space within a system dominated by unsustainable traditions of exploitation and marginalisation.
