Injustice, Inequality and the Cuts, with speaker Danny Dorlinga public meeting organised by Equality NW 5 April 2011, Refreshments 6.30pm, Meeting 7-9pmFriends Meeting House, 6 Mount StreetManchesterM2 5NS

Danny Dorling is the author of Injustice: Why Social Inequality Persists, which was published in 2010.  Danny Dorling is a professor of geography at Sheffield University, and has spent the past 20 years studying the wealth gap. The meeting will also be the paperback launch of Injustice, which is even more relevant now in the current climate of savage cuts which threaten to further increase inequality.

When he handed in his manuscript, Dorling thought he had written a bland account of the gap between rich and poor. The publisher told him it was ‘very angry’. Dorling is that rare university professor: expert, politically engaged and able to explain simply why his subject matters. He describes modern Britain as the most unequal society since Dickens's times, and picks apart the orthodoxies that allow such unfairnessThe Guardian, 30/4/ 2010

Equality NW is an autonomous group linked to The Equality Trust.

We campaign:

= to increase understanding of the extent of income inequality and the harm caused by inequality

= for a fairness test to measure the impact of policies on inequality

= on wage ratio issues, to reduce the gap between top and bottom pay

Come along to this meeting to find out more about inequality and what you can do as part of the growing movement to reduce inequality

Reviews of Injustice “A geographer maps the injustices of Selfish Capitalism with scholarly detachment.”Oliver James, author of Affluenza

”Beliefs which serve privilege, elitism and inequality, infect our minds like computer viruses. But now Dorling provides the brain-cleaning software we need to begin creating a happier society”.Richard Wilkinson, Emeritus Professor of Social Epidemiology & author of The Spirit Level “Brilliant and passionate”Polly Toynbee, The Guardian

”For injustice to flourish, inequality must appear as natural, normal, innate, and inevitable. Danny Dorling, in this impassioned, empirical, and hopeful book, skewers ideologies that justify injustice - and reminds us that a necessary step towards creating a better world is collectively imagining it is possible”.Nancy Krieger, Harvard School of Public Health
