We'll be celebrating the winter months and all their snowy fun from 8pm in the cafe at the 1in12 Club.

There will be a selection of mulled drinks (spiced and warmed on the stove) featuring classic mulled wine, mulled buckfast and mulled soft drinks too! Plus a plethora of minced pies and sweet treats. Everything will be vegan, and there will be gluten free and nut free choices too.

Funds raised will go to TIA Greyhound and Lurcher Rescue. You can find out more about their amazing dog rescue here. As the cold winter months get colder and the 'economic climate' freezes up too, there are more and more dogs in need of loving homes. If you think you might like to re-home an amazing greyhound or lurcher, please get in contact with TIA for a chat. Everyone can help by coming and enjoying some tasty seasonal treats and raising some money at the same time. You'll also be able to see photos of the dogs we sponsored from our last fundraising dinner earlier this year.

Buckfast isn't vegan

I love a bottle of bucky, but you shouldn't be passing it off as vegan. The base wines ("mistellas") they make it from are the cheapest bulk-commodity liquors that can be purchased on the Spanish wholesale market (too rough to be sold as cheap sherry) and are clarified using blood, milk and egg proteins amongst other things.

The Veganity of Buckfast

I have had some correspondance with the company that make buckfast. Although it is not certified as vegan, they have said that "no animal products were used in [buckfast's] clarifying", and "Red wine can be filtered or clarified using animal by products or earth based materials. As far as we are aware our base red wine uses earth based materials."

So buckfast will be abck on hte menu, but with some clear explaination to visitors of what the buckfast statement said. hooray! (or rather, oh no... buckfast chaos ensues!)

One other thing......

If you are referring to this company http://www.buckfast.org.uk/page-home.html , it is not so much whether there are animal products that concerns me(as I eat meat), but rather the legitimate criticism of their marketing strategies in Scotland that directly target alcoholics and younger people; particularly those from working class backgrounds. Recently this was the subject of a documentary where much criticism was levied against the company.
