GM crop trials at Leeds uni

When people took action against GM when it was first introduced to the UK in 1997, it had a huge impact on the biotech industry. But GM is back, and once again we need to get organised to protect our land and food. There are at least 3 crop trials in the UK this year - 2 of these are at Leeds uni.
EU legislation is changing in the biotech industries favour. The new head of the department responsible for scrutinising GM in the UK used to run a pro-biotech lobbying company. Without action now, commercial growing could begin again as soon as 2013.
What's the problem?
Most GM crops are engineered to be resistant to the company's own herbicide so they can be sprayed with chemicals while they're growing. Where GM is being cultivated in North America, this has dramatically increased the amount of herbicide used. There are no demonstrations of higher yields.
While the industry claims it's 'feeding the world', the hungry understand that it's just bad science tied to big business. In India, Brazil, the Philippines and elsewhere peasants have responded by occupying biotech laboratories and pulling up GM crops.
GM seeds are patented, which is why corporations are so keen on them. GM pollen contaminates neighbours' crops and makes the resulting seeds subject to 'intellectual property rights.' Once introduced this pollen pollution is unavoidable. Canada can no longer grow any organic oilseed rape. Spain has just lost its last organic sweetcorn.
What you can do
GM is a big issue and sometimes it can seem like it's hard for individuals to make a difference. But take heart - it was people like you and me who over the past two decades have stopped the full-scale introduction of GM crops into our countryside. Whether it's writing a letter or digging up GM spuds - every action counts. Together we can kick GM out of this country for good!
* Hold a talk or a film showing
* Spread the word - especially around Leeds and on campus
* Boycott GM food
* Write to your MP
* Write to supermarkets
* Set up a local group and take action!
