Today, 31st may 2010, a group of around 20 pro palestinian demonstrators held a peaceful solidarity vigil on the steps of the town hall in centenary square, Bradford.

The group, waving flags and chanting in support of those living in occupied palestinian territory, were gathered to protest at the killing of more than 10 peace activists by the Israeli Security forces late last night. The activists were killed when their turkish registered boat carrying humanitarian aid to gaza was boarded by israeli commandos in international waters. A media blackout in the area has led to conflicting reports as to how the situation unfolded, but international condemnation has been unanimous.

The protest in Bradford which included several young children waving flags, was hastily arranged as part of a wave of similar demonstrations that have today taken place across the uk. More demonstrations are planned for this week as many who feel outraged by the incident pledge to make their feelings known.

Bradford has a long history of solidarity with the Palestinian cause and many of it's residents have witnessed first hand the situation that has been caused by the israeli occupation and the humanitarian crisis that is worstening daily. The un estimates that only 20% of the humanitarian aid that is needed in gaza is reaching the people there since the israeli blockade of gaza began 3 years ago in response to the election of a hamas led government.

One of those on the demonstration who is also a journalist for a local radio station was asking passers by what they knew of the situation there and talking to people about the urgent need for solidarity.

'we need to get the message out as far as possible' said one demonstrator, 'this is an important issue for us all, especially in Bradford'

As protest across the world intensifies, the demonstrators in the North of England are determined to add their voices and support for those involved in the Free Gaza Flotilla incident and for the people living under occupation in Palestine.
