On Tuesday 9th March the Feminist Archive North held an event for International Women's Day on women's peace camps.
The venue held various items from the archive relating to women's peace camps and the campaign against American bases including papers and publications from when Helen John stood against Tony Blair in his sedgefield constituency in 2002 as well as t-shirts from the campaign against Menwith Hill and an exhibition on women peace makers from Bradford Peace Museum. Helen spoke about her experiences and the camp at Menwith Hill, an American spy base which is just a few miles outside Harrogate, North Yorkshire. The base is used by US intelligence services to monitor worldwide communications and is used as part of US military operations, including the war in Iraq. US missile defense systems are also based there. Campaigners and groups have been opposing the base since the 1950s while Helen has also campaigned again the oppression of civil liberties, especially in regards to peace campaigners.
After watching a film entitled 'Don't Trust Menwith Balls' Helen told us more about the Menwith peace camp and answered questions. A recording of this can be found below.
