Activists from the Northern region yesterday took part in a huge blockade of AWE, Aldermaston, which builds nuclear warheads for the UK's Trident Submarines.

One group took part in a very successful super-glue lock on at the Main Gate and Main Pedestrian gate.
They were part of a combined force which helped cripple access to the base for a number of hours, sending a potent message about the need to stop AWE from building it's illegal, immoral and disasterously expensive payloads.
Another group dressed up as 'pro' nuclear Zombies as part of the Zombies for a Nuclear Apocalypse campaign, which parodies the dangerous pro-nuke minority.
They toured the gates through the morning, performing satirical street theatre and comedic singing, providing some much needed entertaintment for those who were locked on (along with the omnipresent FIT team). They also managed to block the Reading Gate (a smaller entrance near the main gate which the police at one point tried to sneak a line of waiting cars through) for over 3 hours, with a fantastic backpack soundsytem and an MP3 player loaded with Zombie tunes for company.

There were 26 arrests through the day, with the police taking a soft approach on our side of the base in particular, no doubt fearful of bad press after the heavy criticism which followed tactics at the G20 summit.
The Blockade was organised by Trident Ploughshares and the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament.
