On Thursday 26th November 2009 Leeds University Union Feminist Society held a Love Music Hate Sexism fundraiser for Behind Closed Doors, a local charity providing support for women suffering from domestic violence which is currently under threat.

The evening event, held at Hyde Park Social Club, raised £220 for the charity with performances of classical and folk music aswell as some epic singing along and poetry, all from local artists who gave their time freely. A 'by donation' clothes shop and button badges for sale boosted the money raised. After the performances were over DJ's kept the party atmosphere going on until the small hours.

Behind Closed Doors offers services including:
* completely confidential information and support on any aspect of domestic abuse.
* practical and emotional information and support over the phone or face to face
* training in the local community covering issues such as housing, health, child protection, legal and financial     services as well as issues facing women experiencing or who have experienced domestic abuse.

The fundraising is so urgently needed because the funds which kept the service financially stable have dried up and although the service helped 500 women in 2008 Leeds Council have yet to deem it essential enough to give funding themselves. The reality is that even if this service is not around, domestic violence will be and Behind Closed Doors is one of teh few places that can help women take back their lives and get out of the cycle of domestic violence.
