Protesters against public spending cuts joined the traditional May Day rally in Manchester.

Trade unions, students and local community groups joined together in a show of solidarity on Sunday.
They marched through the city centre before a rally outside Urbis organised by Manchester TUC (Trade Unions Council).
May 1 has been International Labour Day since the 19th century. The first Manchester march is said to have taken place in 1892 when workers campaigned for a shorter working week.
Speakers at the rally included trade union members preparing for strike action against job cuts.
There were also be representatives from Manchester Coalition Against the Cuts, who are lobbying against spending cuts in the city, University of Manchester Students' Union and the Manchester based human rights organisation RAPAR and transport members of trade union UNISON who are taking action against redundancies.
