The festival took place entirely inside the church grounds and resembled a big parish fete. But it was anything except parochial. There were plenty of exclusively local projects, such as Hulme Community Garden, Manchester Beekeepers, the low carbon cookbook published by Didsbury Civic Society, and Tagpassiton, a loyalty scheme for independent businesses. But there were many other organisations which gave the event both a national and international flavour. The national organisations included the usual green suspects such as Greenpeace, Friends of the Earth and the Vegetarian Society, but there was also a stall collecting signatures for the Robin Hood Tax petition (www.robinhoodtax.org.uk). International organisations included the New Internationalist and the World Development Movement.
If the festival had a theme, it was that sustainable living is inclusive and affordable. And naturally, it had those essential elements for any festival, real ale, farmhouse cider and live music.
