David Cameron was welcomed to Newcastle's Centre for Life today by people angry about the cuts: including students, workers, and benefit claimants. One protestor was arrested.
David Cameron was shouted at, the window of a room he was meeting in was banged on and his car was chased off site.
The protest, called at the last minute, was made up of members from various political and campaign groups and autonomous activists.
Banners and placards had slogans against benefit cuts and the scrapping of EMA, and in support of students, mams, and carers. There was also a banner in support of the HSBC 3 - three people who were arrested at an anti-cuts protest in Newcastle this month see: http://defencecampaign.wordpress.com/
Many passers by were supportive of the protest, and some even joined in.
Unfortunately, one protester was arrested as David Cameron's convoy left the building. The demonstrators then held a spontaneous demo outside Market Street Police Station in solidarity. He has now been transferred to Etal Lane Police station.
Please come down to Etal Lane police station to show your solidarity if you are able, or phone 01912146555 and ask to speak to the Custody Sergeant at Etal Lane Police Station, ask after the arrested demonstrator’s health, ask what they are being charged with and demand their immediate release.
