Restaurants in the North still selling Fois Gras

Despite massive opposition, and a hard fought campaign in the city of York which resulted in the City Council attempting to ban the sale of Fois Gras from sale anywhere within it's walls (which was subject to a legal challenge over their right to do this by some with vested interests), it seems the message just isn't getting through to some food outlets in the North who insist on continuing to sell it despite it's production having been banned in the uk because of the extreme cruelty involved. In an industry where cruelty is commonplace, for this to have happened is a good indicator of just how bad the practise is.

For the uninitiated, here is a brief rundown of what Fois Gras is and why it is so cruel, taken from the Viva website:
"Every year in France, 30.7 million ducks and geese are forced to ingest obscene amounts of food so that their livers swell painfully to up to ten times their normal size. Their diseased livers are then sold as ‘high class’ cuisine: foie-gras (literally ‘fatty liver’ in French). This is torture marketed as a delicacy – the pain and suffering of millions of birds forgotten amongst the clinking of glasses filled with fine wine. Other countries also produce foie-gras, including Hungary and China."
"The suffering of these birds is so extreme it would be illegal in this country. However, free trade laws mean that every year we import tonnes of these diseased livers, marketed as an expensive delicacy. Britain is a driving force behind this cruel industry."
"For the millions of little female ducklings born in France another horror awaits. They are tossed alive into electric mincers at just a few days old to suffer a violent and horrific death – their only crime is they don’t put on weight as quickly as their brothers."
"The pain and suffering caused by foie-gras production has no place in a civilised society. Our aim is simple – to make Britain a foie-gras free zone."
Many groups have already activiely campaigned against the sale and production of Fois Gras and now they need your help. You can do this by writing a (polite!) letter to the owners of the following establishments asking them them to explain why they continue to support this awful industry and sell fois gras, and asking them to stop. Hopefully, if enough people voice their objection, they will start to realise that they will not get away with it unnoticed and that people want Fois Grois out of the North for good!
There are groups across he north that are actively campaigning for a compassionate, cruelty free lifestyle and animal liberation. There are too many to list here but the comprehensive resource for findig your nearest groups and events can be found at the Veggies Website.
